Introductory guide to publishing data

Once you have decided what data you want to publish, you’ll want to get that data onto your Koordinates site. There are only two general steps you need to follow:

  • The first, upload, is how you get your data onto the Koordinates platform.
  • The second, import, is how you make that dataset visible on your site.

This guide is intended for first-time administrators of a Koordinates site. For a more detailed introduction to administering data on a Koordinates site, read the rest of our guides - or dive further into our support documentation.

Select Add from the main menu

The first thing you need to do is select Add from the main menu to the left of your screen. This will give you a range of options on how to add data to your site.

For the purposes of this guide, we are going to select Upload.

This will take you to the Upload Data tab of your data management dashboard.

Click Choose file

Note that Koordinates sites require data to be archived in ZIP, ZIP64 and 7z. The archive itself, however, can include a range of data types, which are listed here.

You can also upload your data via URL by clicking Add data from URL. Just enter the link to the data archive, and your Koordinates site will do the rest.

Choose data and click Import

After your upload is complete, your data is now on Koordinates. The next step is to import your data into your site.

Once your data is uploaded, you will be automatically taken to Import & Update Data, where you will see a list of uploaded datasets. From there, simply select which data layers and tables you want to import and click Import.

Enter details

After importing your data, you will be asked to enter the details for your datasets. This will give you the opportunity to enter descriptive information, licensing terms, permissions and other optional details.

If you want to skip this step, you can click Import Now. You can always edit these details later on.

Note that if you are updating a dataset that already exists on your Koordinates site, click Update Existing.
