GeoJPEG format

GeoJPEG is a widely supported raster format that has historically been widely used for aerial photography. While GeoJPEG has generally been supplanted by GeoTIFF, it is supported for both export and import by Koordinates. 

GeoJPEG in your GIS

Because GeoJPEGs do not have projection information built into the file format, users will need to configure their GIS in order for them to display correctly. Also note that GeoJPEG does not support ‘NoData’ or transparency. This means that anything in the source data that is either 'NoData' or transparent is displayed as white. Users will need to alter this from within their GIS application.

Image quality of GeoJPEG

GeoJPEG is, broadly speaking, a 'lossy' format, which means that the quality of imagery exported to GeoJPEG will be less than the original source file. Koordinates configures GeoJPEG exports to ensure that they are 95% of the quality of the original, which means that they should be effectively identical for most users. 

Multi-tile imports

Koordinates supports the import of multi-tile GeoJPEGs, though note that the source tiles have to have the same projection and resolution. Tile imports do not, however, need to be the same file format; raster layers can also be updated with a (non-geo) JPEG.

Projection on import

Because GeoJPEG does not support projection information, Koordinates cannot auto-detect this on import, and the projection must be provided by the publisher on import. This projection information for GeoJPEG data must be provided in EPSG. Learn more about projections here.
