Why did my export fail or look wrong?

Koordinates checks an export before it starts. If something is wrong, the export window marks the affected layer, shows a message in red or amber, and doesn’t let you create the export until it’s fixed. This page lists those messages and what to change. It applies to koordinates.com and to customer sites.

What the layer shows What it means What to do
Over size limit This layer is over the site’s size limit, or over the limit for the format you chose. Crop to a smaller area, deselect layers, or choose a different format. See Overview of download limits.
Outside Crop The layer doesn’t overlap your crop area. It’s left out of the export. Change the crop to include the layer, or ignore the message if you don’t want that layer. If every layer is outside the crop, the export window says The crop is outside the selected data.
Invalid for this CRS The coordinate reference system you chose isn’t suitable for where the data is. Choose a different coordinate system. The suggested list shows those that suit your data. See Understanding projections.
View Only You’re not allowed to download this layer. See Requesting access to restricted data.
Commercial data not supported This layer is commercial data, which can’t be exported from here. Deselect it from the export.
Error Another problem, such as one of the format refusals below. Check the sections below. If nothing fits, contact support.

Other messages appear for the whole export rather than for a layer: No datasets selected (choose at least one layer), and, for a courier order, Your selected data is below the minimum size (a courier export must be larger than 50GB, so use a normal download for smaller data). Some refusals appear as a short code such as dwg-invalid-crs or kml-raster-too-large; the matching section below says what to change.

Export size is estimated from the compressed (zipped) size, and shown on the Create Export button. Three kinds of limit apply:

  • The site’s limit on a single export. See Overview of download limits. The message reads Your export is over the size limit, or gives your size and the limit.
  • A limit for the format. DWG and PDF vector exports, and KML vector exports, have lower limits, and KML raster exports are limited too.
  • A limit for PDF rasters. A PDF export is refused if it would use more than 500 source tiles. The message reads Your PDF export contains too many source tiles. Crop to a smaller area or use fewer layers.

To get under the limit, crop the data, deselect layers, or, for rasters, use a lower resolution (see Customising export files). On sites that offer it, you can order a courier delivery for large exports.

Some choices are refused before the export starts. These show as Error on the layer or on the export.

  • ASCII Grid with more than one band. ASCII Grid can hold only one band. If a raster layer has several bands, exporting it as ASCII Grid is refused, rather than silently losing bands. Choose a format that supports several bands, such as GeoTIFF.
  • KML for large rasters. Raster KML exports are limited to 100 million pixels per layer, whatever the file size. Crop to a smaller area or choose a lower resolution.
  • KML only supports one coordinate system. KML exports must be in WGS 84 (EPSG:4326). Choose it, or leave the coordinate system to default.
  • DWG needs a projected coordinate system. For DWG, use a projected coordinate system, or a compound one whose horizontal part is projected. In DWG exports, rasters are supplied as separate image files.
  • PDF and DWG can’t be mixed. If you export in PDF or DWG, every layer type has to use that format. You can’t mix them with other formats.
  • Tables and grids can’t be exported to KML.

See Overview of download limits and KML for more.

  • Invalid for this CRS. The area where a coordinate system is meant to be used has to overlap your data, so a New Zealand coordinate system won’t work for data in another country. If you crop, the check uses the cropped area.
  • Vertical-only systems aren’t supported. To export height values, use a compound coordinate system that pairs a horizontal and a vertical one, or a 3D system.
  • Geocentric (Earth-centred) systems are listed low in the suggestions. They’re for specialist use. Rasters can’t be exported in a geocentric system, and File Geodatabase export in a geocentric system isn’t supported. If you aren’t sure, choose a projected or geographic one.
  • No coordinate system chosen. Vector, raster and grid exports need one. Pick one in the export window.

If an export stops with an error, Koordinates automatically raises a support ticket. See The export page. You can also raise a ticket with the layer name, the format and the crop you used.
